Austria will take place in a Euro Championships for the first time in their history due to the fact they qualified automatically as joint hosts of the tournament.
Not much is expected from the home nation, but they may be able to surprise a few people, Austria warmed up for the tournament by drawing 1-1 with Nigeria last Tuesday.
Austria coach Josef Hickersberger named his 23-man squad for Euro 2008, with midfielder Markus Weissenberger and striker Sanel Kuljic both axed.
Eight players were discarded from the original 31-man squad, with Werder Bremen’s Martin Harnik, yet to start for Austria, a surprise inclusion.
Croatia finished top of the UEFA Euro 2008 qualifying Group E, five points ahead of second place Russia. Many fans will be aware that it was Croatia who hit the final nail in the coffin of England’s qualification hopes with a memorable 3-2 victory at Wembley back in November.
Croatia’s record in the qualifying campaign was impressive, collecting twenty nine points overall, with their record reading nine wins, two draws and one defeat in twelve games. They were also the top goal scorers in their group having found the net twenty eight times, ten more than second placed Russia.
Coach Slaven Bilic says his team can still win Euro 2008 despite the loss of striker Eduardo. Eduardo, who has scored eight goals in his 14 games for Croatia, suffered his break when he was tackled by Birmingham defender Martin Taylor in February.
