In the first leg played in Germany Barcelona had to withstand some heavy pressure to ensure that they won the game and had an advantage in the second leg.
The much touted seventeen year old Bojan Krkic put Barcelona ahead after just twelve minutes from point-blank range from Thierry Henry cross.
Thierry Henry had latched on to the loose ball to find the unmarked Bojan at the far post, his finish made him the second youngest scorer in Champions League history.
Once Barcelona had taken the lead, many people felt as though Schalke 04 would have been able to get back into the game, following the result that was played on the weekend which had seen Barcelona lose a game after leading 2-0.
Despite Schalke’s domination of the second half they were unable to find the equalising goal. Halil Altintop, Soren Larsen and Marcelo Bordon all came close but were either thwarted by Valdes in the Barcelona goal, or missed the target.
In team news for Barcelona, they will be without the Brazilian showman Ronaldinho who is expected to be out of action for around six weeks. With his future uncertain at the club, he may well have played his last game for the Catalan giants.
