Last Tuesday John Arne Riise’s injury-time own goal gave Chelsea the advantage in the Champions League semi final after it looked like Liverpool had done enough to earn a victory.

Five minutes into stoppgae time, Riise headed in Salomon Kalou’s cross past a despairing Reina to silence the Anfield Crowd.

Liverpool had taken the lead with Dirk Kuyt’s close-range finish three minutes before the interval and it took fine saves by Cech to deny Gerrard and Torres as Liverpool looked to finish the game and the tie.

In the build up to the game, Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez believes his side can overcome a poor record at Chelsea to reach the Champions League final. They now go into the return leg needing to score - something they have not managed at Stamford Bridge under Benitez. “We haven’t scored there but that is just a statistic and maybe we can change that,” said Benitez.

The team news for Chelsea is that Frank Lampard is set to return to the side. Lampard missed Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Manchester United following the death of his mother Pat from pneumonia.

In team news for Liverpool, Sami Hyypia, who had played in every one of the Reds’ Champions League ties this season before dropping to the bench for the first leg at Anfield last Tuesday is hoping for a recall.
