In their opening game Czech Republic’s substitute striker Vaclav Sverkos gave his side a winning start to Euro 2008 with a second-half strike that finally broke Switzerland’s resistance.

Czech Republic twice lived dangerously before they took the lead with Petr Cech making good saves from Alexander Frei.

As the game was looking to be heading towards a draw, Sverkos slotted in a low volley from 12 yards after latching on to a ball over the top of the defence with just twenty minutes remaning.

In team news, striker Milan Baros, who was the leading goalscorer at Euro 2004, is set to start the game alongside Jan Koller up front in place of midfielder Jaroslave Plasil.

Right-back Zdenek Pospech is fit again after flu, while Marek Matejovsky could replace David Jarolim in midfield.

On Saturday Portugal started their campaign with in impressive fashion with victory over Turkey. Defender Pepe opened the scoring after 61 minutes, slotting the ball past Turkey keeper Volkan Demirel after a slick exchange with Nuno Gomes, Raul Meireles slid home the second in injury time after a flowing move.

Portugal could have won by a much bigger margin, with Cristiano Ronaldo hitting the post from a free kick and Nuno Gomes twice denied by the woodwork.

In team news for Portugal, they are expected to name the same team that beat Turkey 2-0. Matejovsky, who has been suffering from a abdominal muscle injury, says he is ready to return to football.
