Germany qualified for Euro 2008 by finishing second in the group D qualifying group, two points behind the Czech Republic.

Germany’s record read eight wins, three draws and just the one defeat, which saw them gain ten points more than the Republic of Ireland, who finished in third place in the group.

The German squad had a few surprises, with teenage midfielder Marko Marin being dropped from the final 23-man squad for Euro 2008 despite making his debut shortly before the tournament.
David Odonkor, who set up Miroslav Klose for Germany’s opening goal, in the 2-2 draw with Belarus did make coach Joachim Loew’s final cut, but fellow midfielder Jermaine Jones and striker Patrick Helmes were left out.

Poland finished top of the Group A qualifying group, one point ahead of the much fancied Portugal and four points ahead of Serbia and Finland.

Poland amassed 28 points, with eight wins, four draws and two defeats from fourteen games. In squad news, Poland goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak will miss Euro 2008 after injuring his back. Kuszczak had an MRI scan in Graz, Austria on Friday after hurting his spine and doctors decided he would be unable to play for up to three weeks.

Poland also lost midfielder Jakub Blaszczykowski after he aggravated a hamstring injury and was replaced by Hertha Berlin’s Lukasz Piszczek.
