In their last fixture Germany recorded an impressive 2-1 victory over Russia, who are considered to be their biggest rivals in gaining qualification.
Podolski gave Germany the lead after just nine minutes, before captain Michael Ballack made it 2-0. Russia though did get back into the game via Arshavin just after half time, which ment that there would be some tense moments for the Germans.
Germany are top of the table, having won two and drawn one of their opening two games, scoring eleven goals in the process.
On Saturday Wolves midfielder David Edwards scored his first international goal as Wales struggled to see off Liechtenstein.
It took Wales until the 43rd minute to find the breakthrough, with Edwards cooley finishing from Simon Davies’s low cross.
The win was sealed with 10 minutes left to play when the visitors’ Mario Frick deflected in Ched Evans’ header.
The scoreline should and could have been more, with Craig Bellamy missing from the penalty, the third time in as many games that this has happened to John Toshack’s side.
Manager Toshack must decide if he is going to make changes to the line up that struggled, with many expecting James Collins to be called into the side in place of an attacking player.
Wales have so far won two of their three fixtures, and recording a loss in Russia. Despite playing against two of the lesser teams, the side have only scored four goals.
