When the two sides met each other last month, Liverpool had to settle for a draw after Simao Sabrosa’s late equaliser rescued a point for Atletico Madrid.
Robbie Keane’s cool finish from a suspiciously offside position gave the visitors the lead in the 14th minute. But Simao, who had earlier seen a shot turned on to the post by goalkeeper Pepe Reina, drove home after 83 minutes.
If Liverpool collect all three points here tonight, they will qualify for the second round of the competition.
In team news for Liverpool, star striker Fernando Torres may be passed fit, if he is, he will be facing his former club, where he made such a big name for himself before joining Liverpool. He has missed the last five games for his club, two of which have been against Chelsea and Manchester United.
There are no other injury, or suspension concerns for manager Rafa Benitez.
In team news for Atletico Madrid, Argentinian starlet Sergio Aguero is expected to start the game, after the striker returned to the team at the weekend after being rested. He marked his return to the side with a good performance in a 2-0 victory over Mallorca.
Goalkeeper Gregory Coupet has recovered from an injury, but defenders Tomas Ujfalusi and Giourkas Seitaridis will miss the game
