The build up to this Merseyside Derby has been tense with both managers being more than aware that a win here could go a long way to securing a fourth place league finish.


The build up to the game hasn’t been ideal for Liverpool, with fresh doubts being raised over the club’s future after co-owner George Gillett revealed relations with partner Tom Hicks are now “unworkable”. Hicks is said to be aiming to take sole control of the club, while investment group Dubai International Capital also wants to invest.

This news comes on the back of the team’s poor performance last weekend against Manchester United which saw them loose the game by a 3-0 score line.

In team news for Liverpool, Striker Fernando Torres is fit after coming through Spain’s friendly with no problems but Argentinian midifield battler Javier Mascherano is suspended.

Defender Steve Finnan is close to a return after a groin problem while Yossi Benayoun and John Arne Riise are pushing for a place in the side.

Last weekend Everton dropped two points as they could only draw against West Ham. Yakubu’s powerful finish gave Everton the lead after eight minutes, but West Ham came back strongly, with Dean Ashton heading home Lucas Neill’s cross after 68 minutes.

In team related news, this week Everton were rocked by the news of midfielder Tim Cahill being ruled out of the rest of the season with a broken metatarsal.

The 28-year-old Australian lasted just 10 minutes against West Ham last Saturday after suffering a recurrence of an old foot injury. Striker Andrew Johnson is also struggling to be fit for the game as he is struggling to shake off a groin injury.

For you statistical fans out there, you will be interested to know that Everton have not won at the home of their rivals since 1999 when a Kevin Campbell goal gave his side a 1-0 victory.
