Last Wednesday Manchester United took a huge step forward towards the semi finals of the Champions League with an impressive 2-0 victory over Roma at the Stadio Olimpico.

Who else but Cristiano Ronaldo gave Man United the lead when he ran all of 35 yards to meet Paul Scholes’ delicate cross with a powerful header after thirty nine minutes.

Despite taking the lead Manchester United had found themselves under pressure for much of the first half, with Christian Panucci, once of Chelsea wasting Roma’s best opportunity by blazing the ball over the top of the bar from six yards out. Mirko Vucinic also saw his header superbly saved by Edwin Van Der Sar.

With Roma constantly pushing forward, Manchester United caught them on the break after sixty six minutes. Ji Subg Park headed Wes Brown’s long cross into the six yard box causing Roma’s Doni to make a mistake which aloud Wayne Rooney to bundle the ball into the empty net.

That second goal sank Roma’s spirits and Man United eased through the final twenty minutes of the game.

Manchester United will be without their first choice defensive pairing for the game with both Rio Ferdinand and Vidic missing the action due to injuries. Gary Neville is in line to make an appearance, with Wes Brown and Mikkael Silvestre expected to be the central pairing in defence.
