The striker sat out Tuesday’s Champions League win over Barcelona with a hip injury but Sir Alex Ferguson is confident he will return to fitness. Patrice Evra left the field on a stretcher during injury-time at Old Trafford on Tuesday but is expected to recover. But Nemanja Vidic remains doubtful with the face injury that ruled him out against Barcelona.

Last weekend West Ham let a 2-0 lead slip against Newcastle in a game which ended 2-2. George McCartney’s left-wing cross was volleyed home by Mark Noble before Dean Ashton fired in West Ham’s second after being found by Bobby Zamora’s flick-on. But Newcastle would come back and level the score before half time and that’s how the game ended.

It was a remarkable turnaround because West Ham were in complete control, with Newcastle looking a shadow of the team that were unbeaten in six matches prior to their visit to east London.

In team news for West Ham, Freddie Ljungberg will miss the game and is also a doubt for the Euro 2008 finals after suffering a cracked rib during the draw with Newcastle. The 31-year-old was stretchered off after a first-half clash with Magpies defender Steven Taylor.

In the reverse fixture earlier this season, West Ham won the game 2-1 with goals from Ferdinand and Upson after Ronaldo had put Man United in the lead.
