The Boro ended last season with a freak 8-1 against Manchester City and Southgate wants to see more results of that nature during this campaign.

Much of that is likely to be on the shoulders of striker Afonso Alves, who initially struggled for goals when he arrived at Middlesbrough, but began to find form towards the end of the season. He did help himself to a hat trick in the final day of the season and has been banging in the goals during pre season.

Despite all the hype last season Tottenham had a very disappointing time last time around which saw them replace their manager and has seen a revolving transfer door throughout the summer.

In team news, this fixture may have come around to soon for Justin Hoyte, after Arsenal accepted an undisclosed offer for the player.

Tottenham will be looking to earn a more positive start to their league season this time around, having lost their opening fixture in each of the last two Premier League seasons, away to Bolton and last season away at Sunderland.

In team news for Tottenham, they will be without defender Alan Hutton as he has a foot injury, so Didier Zokora could play at right-back.

Ledley King is fit to start and striker Dimitar Berbatov, who has been linked with Manchester United, will be considered to play for Spurs.
