The Netherlands qualified for Euro 2008 by finishing second in Group G, three points behind Romania. The Netherlands are known for failing to live up to expectations and did so to a certain degree in the qualification stages. In twelve games they won eight of them, but drew and were beaten twice. They only found the net fifteen times as well, eleven times less than Romania!
In squad news for the Netherlands Arjen Robben will miss Netherland’s Euro 2008 opener against Italy in Berne after picking up a groin injury in training.
Netherland coach Marco van Basten said: “It’s very disappointing for Arjen and a pity for the team as we have lost another left winger in Ryan Babel.”
Italy qualified for Euro 2008 by finishing top of the qualification group B. Italy’s record was impressive, collecting nine wins, two draws and just one defeat in twelve games. Italy finished three points ahead of second placed France, despite scoring less goals and conceeding more than them.
Italy are of course the reigning world champions having won the world cup just over two years ago in Germany over France.
In squad news for Italy Alessandro del Piero says he would relish the chance to lead Italy after captain Fabio Cannavaro was ruled out of Euro 2008 because of injury. The 33-year-old is the most capped player in the squad, with 86, but it is unlikely coach Roberto Donadoni will pick him to start against Netherlands.
