Rangers face Portugal’s Sporting Lisbon in the quarter-finals of the Uefa Cup.

Rangers of course got to this stage of the competition at the expense of Werder Bremen. In the first leg the Werder Bremen goalkeeper Tim Wiese had a night for forget, allowing two soft goals to get past him, the first by Daniel Cousin and later by Steven Davis.

That gave Rangers a 2-0 lead to take to Germany, where they made it through despite losing to Werder Bremen in a game which was dominated by the German side. Rangers withstood long spells of pressure with goalkeeper Allan McGregor keeping the score down to just the single goal by the German side, ending 1-0 on the night.

In team news, Rangers midfielder Brahim Hemdani has recovered from a groin injury and Kevin Thompson, who scored on the weekend is also in line to play.

When the draw was made Rangers chief executive Martin Bain said: “We have nothing to fear and it’s all about enjoying it.

Sporting Lisbon were in good form on the weekend, defeating Naval 4-1 away from home after finding themselves 1-0 down early on. The goals were scored by Veloso and Djalo, with Liedson helping himself to two goals.

Sporting Libson are now fifth in the Portuguese Bwin Liga, but are only four points behind Benfica who are in second place.
