Liverpool once again have to enter the competition at the qualifying stages after finishing fourth place in the league. They will look to repeat the form in the competition which saw them lift the trophy back in 2005.

Steven Gerrard is said to have a good chance of playing the match after seemingly recovered from an injury. Manager Rafa Benitez has also said that Xabi Alonso will also figure in the game. This has come to a suprise to many of the Liverpool fans as he was expected to be leaving the club. Him being cup tied in Europe’s elite competition for the season could see his price tag reduced.

Liverpool will arrive at the game in confident mood following a string of impressive pre season results and performances. Last Friday they beat Lazio 1-0 and had previously scored four goals at Valerenga and Rangers.

Standard Liege don’t have many players that will instantly striker fear into Liverpool supporters mind, but they are a good side, capable of producing quality football.

Fans of the Premiership may be familiar with the American Oguchi Onyewu, who made eleven appearances whilst on loan at Newcastle United in 2007.

Their main goal threat is likely to come from Steven Defour, who awarded the Golden Shoe, the official award for most valuable player in the Belgian League last season. Steven Defour came to prominence after impressing during a spell at KRC Genk, which caught the attention of many clubs including Ajax.
