Despite 15th place not appearing to be particularly impressive, it was in fact the Black Cats highest Premier League finish since 2000-01, when a Peter Reid side achieved a top seven placing.
One of the new faces is of course El Hadji Diouf, who cost Liverpool in the region of ten million pounds in 2002. During a fairly unsuccessful three year spell at the club, he only managed three league goals in 41 league starts.
Manager Roy Keane has been boosted by an abundance of players that have recovered from injury and are able to play the game, including Pascal Chimbonda, Kieran Richardson, Phil Bardsley and Danny Higginbotham.
Sunderland will be fairly optimistic going into the game, having Won three of their last five opening-day fixtures of a Premier League season.
Liverpool will need to put their poor midweek performance to the back of their minds after they were lucky to escape Belgium with a draw.
Liverpool were dominated by Standard Liege in the first leg of their Champions League third qualifying round tie and could have lost by a few goals. Liege came close to two particular occasions, Marouane Fellaini saw a header hit the inside of the post and Reina was also called upon to save a Dante Bonfim penalty.
Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez will know that his side must win fixtures like this one and is expected to field an attacking line up. Robbie Keane could be given his league debut for the club and if he does, will more than likely be lining up next to Fernando Torres in attack.
