Despite no individual being the nailed on favourite to take the Scotland managerial job, Craig Levein, the Dundee United manager seems to be the bookmaker’s favourite. Although the Scotland job is famously a ‘poison chalice’, it is recognised that Levein may well take the role if it was offered to him. Levein himself retired early as a player, this was forced upon him through injury, and soon after he took coaching roles at Hearts and Livingston. His first managerial position was at Cowdenbeath where he still revered for the miraculous job he did. The team, struggling when Levein took over, were seemingly transformed into a squad that could challenge for honours. They were promoted in 2001, however, Levein was offered the Hearts manager’s role – a job he couldn’t turn down given the latter team’s status within Scottish football (perhaps the 3rd biggest side behind the Old Firm). After a successful spell at Hearts, he was headhunted by English Championship side Leicester City, and he became their manager on 19th October, 2004. Levein’s time there was not one to remember, and after flirting with the relegation zone on numerous occasions, he was removed from the position.
After a brief non-contractual spell at Raith Rovers, Levein was offered the Dundee United job, where he is currently enjoying a string of solid seasons – he is also the Director of Football.
