Graeme Souness, former Liverpool stalwart, is an interesting outsider for the Scotland job. Many Scottish fans believe Souness’ style of management – a strict, hands on approach – would be welcome to the national side, especially in a time when aggression and determination on the field seems to be at an all time low.
Souness’ beginnings in management hark back in 1986, where he took over as manager of Rangers – he became player manager, after recently leaving Italian club Sampdoria. Souness began his spell at Rangers with a plethora of English signings, most notably, ex England captain Terry Butcher, Ray Wilkins, and Trevor Francis. Met with initial trepidation from the Rangers’ fateful, the signings proved to be successful, and the lure of European football was enough to persuade a further trope of acquisitions, such as goalkeeper Chris Woods. Souness’ Rangers won the Scottish championship in 1987, and also the League Cup.
Souness’ next job was at Liverpool, a team that he gained much acclaim at as a player. Although honours were relatively sparse during the tenure, Souness made some excellent signings that would strengthen the time in the long term – he also gave a professional contract to Robbie Fowler, a striker who would go onto make history in a Liverpool shirt. Souness has also managed abroad, with Galatasaray, Benfica, and Torino, which could strengthen his bid to become Scotland boss. Relatively successful spells in top flight English football with Blackburn and Newcastle followed his European jobs – and he was praised for bringing on a host of young players that are now established Premiership footballers, such as Damien Duff and David Dunn.
