In the build up to the game Steve Bruce has rejected any suggestion that his Wigan side might not give their all in the game.

Wigans form of course against the big four sides in the league has improved greatly under Steve Bruce. Having suffered a run of 20 straight league defeats against the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool following their promotion in 2005, Wigan have earned 1-1 home draws against each of the sides so far this season.

In team news for Wigan, midfielder Kevin Kilbane has been told to rest after struggling for weeks with a back problem so he misses out, while defenders Mario Melchiot and Erik Edman remain sidelined.

Last Saturday Manchester United moved to within one win of the Premier League title with a comfortable victory against West Ham.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored from 12 yards after three minutes and bundled home his 40th goal of the season from close range in the 24th minute. Carlos Tevez added a brilliant third and Michael Carrick drove in a fourth after 58 minutes.

That victory means United will retain the title with victory at Wigan thanks to their vastly-superior goal difference compared to rivals Chelsea.

In team news for Man United, Wayne Rooney is unlikely to start but could make the substitutes’ bench. Nemanja Vidic has been cleared to play by United’s medical team.
